Divas Half Marathon

IMAG0254-1About a month ago I ran my first half marathon.  One year ago, heck, 6 months ago, I never thought I'd be saying that I ran 13.1 miles.  I'm so glad I did.  yep ... I'm sore.  Yes, I was tired yesterday (getting up at 4:50 on a SUNDAY following a week of taking care of a sick baby and then running 13.1 miles is a recipe for exhaustion).

But once the idea of running a half marathon was planted in my brain I couldn't let it go.  So I found a training plan and got cracking.  I didn't stick to the plan 100%.  It was mostly a guide.  I modified it, skipped a couple runs, did what I could to train amid our busy schedule.

Then the day arrived.  Waking up was the easy part.  I didn't sleep much the night before.  Both because of a sick baby and nerves.  I was excited and nervous.  But it was just another long run.  That's all.  The part I was most nervous about was logistics in getting to the starting line.  Getting to the parking lot early enough to get a spot and get on a shuttle.

After getting to the park and finding my way to the starting line, I said good-bye to my family.  My very supportive and loving family.

I did some stretching.  Not nearly enough.  I spent too much time waiting in line to use the bathroom, so I lost stretching time.  I chatted with a few women around me.  There were about 3500 women running the half marathon.  That's a lot of estrogen!

I decided not to wear my Garmin.  I like the freedom of running without knowing how fast and how far and how long I've been running.  Just running.  I did track it on my phone, tucked away in a pocket on my hydration belt.

The first 3 miles seemed really long.  I felt good, but they just seemed to take awhile. Finally we broke out into a residential neighborhood and time seemed to go a little faster.  I just kept on trucking.  Around mile 4 1/2 we saw women running the other way; having already reached the turnaround and going back toward the finish line.  We cheered them on, and they in turn cheered us on.

Mile 6 appeared pretty quickly after that.  I was ecstatic to be just about halfway done.  I checked my phone and I was only an hour into it.  Pretty good pace for me.

Then something happened.  About mile 7 my big toe started to go numb.  I tried to run through it.  It happens from time to time and it can go away on its own.  But it didn't.  Around mile 9 I stopped to adjust my shoe.  I really wanted to feel my toe.  That 30 second pause to adjust my shoe did me in.  I lost all my momentum.  I had to walk short stretches from there to the end.  Never longer than about 100 yards, but it was just enough of a stop to screw me up.

Mile 10 felt great.  Every step after that was my longest run.  Even if I was walking, it was still further than I'd ever run/walked before.

At the water stop near mile 11, there was a volunteer with a hose spraying water at the runners.  That was heavenly.  It wasn't too hot outside, maybe high 60s, but there was absolutely no breeze.  And the fresh, cool water was just awesome.  That gave me the oomph I needed to keep going.

Mile 12 came and I was so happy.  I picked up the pace.  Maybe a little too much, though, because I needed to walk even more than before.  I was really upset that I had to walk, but I'd rather walk than collapse.  I made it to the final stretch, I saw all the fans and supporters and family members and pushed it as hard as I could.  Josh and Audrey and Annie were waiting for me near the tiara station.  Audrey saw me coming and ran out into the path and gave me a big hug.  I wish I could've stayed there and hugged her longer, or carried her to the finish line.  But I couldn't.  I grabbed my tiara and my hot pink boa and sprinted as hard as I could to the finish line. I grabbed a photo of myself crossing the finish line, but it wasn't good.  It was kinda pathetic, actually.

Audrey, Annie and Josh met me on the other side.  I was so happy to have my family there waiting for me and supporting me.  I have the best cheering section ever!!!!!!

My official time was 2 hours, 29 minutes and 7 seconds.  My initial goal was under 2 1/2 hours.  I would've like to be closer to 2 hours 15 minutes (about a 10:30 pace), but I'm OK with what I did.

It took me about 2 weeks to fully recover.  I wish I'd taken my last month of training more seriously and got at least 1 more 10 mile run in.  I wish I had stretched better before hand.  And I wish I had a better breakfast.  But these are now things that I know for my next time out there.

I will do another half marathon.  In fact, I'd love to do a full marathon someday.  Big Sur is calling my name.  Not sure I'll be ready in 2013, but definitely by 2014.

Happy Birthday Audrey Grace

_DSC7555 Three. Three. Three.

Three years ago my life changed.  I became a mommy.

Audrey Grace, my first-born daughter.  My beautiful little girl.

In the last year I've seen your vocabulary explode.  You speak not just in full sentences and paragraphs, but you tell stories.  You have a great imagination.  Your logic and reasoning skills are amazing to me.

You've told me that we can't call you by your nick-names anymore.  As sad as that makes me, I will do my best to call you Audrey, as you request.

Your hair has grown so long and the curls are really starting to take shape.  I have been told many times to cut off the long hair in the back, but I just can't bear to see it go.

I forget that you are only three.  Sometimes you act like a 5 year-old, sometimes you act like a 13 y/o.  I am amazed at how big you seem.

Being a big sister suits you well.  You are so kind to your baby sister.  You have great compassion when she gets hurt.  And you love to do things with her and play with her.  I love to see you grow and mature and turn from a toddler to a little girl.

Happy Birthday Audrey Grace!!!!

Mommy and Me - Mount Diablo

We took a day trip to Mount Diablo the other day.  I managed to get in one picture with Audrey.  Annie was busy hanging with Aunt Becky while we climbed on the rocks.

Mommy and Me

Mommy and Me on a Tuesday ... cause I forgot yesterday.

On Mother's Day, we went up North where Josh's band had a gig and we ate dinner, then walked around downtown.  This was a cool little structure that on the sidewalk.

Audrey, with most of the structure in view.

Before church started, my girls were hanging with me in the choir.  During a down moment, I snapped a picture of the three of us.  They LOVE seeing themselves in the front-facing camera.  Best way to get the little one to smile.

Mom Purse

I was going through the contents of my purse the other day and pulled out the old stand-bys such as my phone, sunglasses, wallet, pen, keys, etc.  Then came out the church dolls, the calculator, floss, lotion, kid's book, Kindle, and other assorted items.  Josh said, after my complaining that I can't find anything because of all the stuff in there, "Well, you have a mom purse."

yeah, that's true.  My purse is a catch-all.  Sippy cups, toys, books, scraps of paper, trash, it all gets piled into my purse.  But I also carry things for the girls.  Entertainment  when we're in a waiting room or driving.  Things to make them feel better when sad.  It's the bag of tricks.  It's my job to have at my disposal anything the girls might need at any moment and my purse is my magical bag to make it happen.  It's where the trash gets put when there is no trash can.  It is a catch-all.

I was reflecting on my "mom purse" this morning.  My girls have me and my mom purse when they need it.  And I have God and His Word.  When I'm sad, happy, hurt, angry ... God's Word has something in it to help me through my trial.  It has words of encouragement.  Words of affirmation.  And words of admonishment when I need it (which is far more often than I care to admit).  I can't imagine what God's purse looks like.  How big it must be to provide all His children when the band-aids and tissues, books and coloring sheets, toys and trinkets.  Where he stores our candy wrappers and emotional garbage.

Some days my mom purse is inadequate.  I don't have tissues when Audrey has a runny nose.  Or I run out of band-aids when she has an owie.  But God's purse always is fully stocked with all the love, encouragement, joy, affirmation, hugs, and kisses.  He is always ready for whatever we need.  We just need to ask Him.

Annie - 17 months

_DSC7327.jpgThinking about Annie's development, it's been awhile since I've posted anything.

Words that she can say on her own, not mimicking.
  • hi
  • bye
  • mom
  • baby
  • please
  • thank you
  • dada
  • ni-ni
  • uh oh
Signs that she can do, usually on her own:
  • milk
  • more
  • poop
  • teeth
  • book
  • all done
I think it's time to teach a new sign or two.  I am thinking about adding in dog and bath.

she's getting over being sick.  Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease, which attacked her mouth.  Lots of sores on her gums, mostly in the pockets where the new teeth are growing in.  She has been very cranky and needy the last 10 days.  It's been a very trying experience.  She's at about 80% now.  Fever is gone.  She's eating better, but still relying on breastmilk a lot.  Sleeping is poor.

  • She scribbles really well.
  • Loves to do anything her big sister is doing, including stealing her toys.
  • She's climbing up onto couches, beds, anything that's in her reach.
  • She can and loves to buckle typical safety buckles (like in high-chairs, shopping carts, etc)
  • She loves to dance to music, especially the theme song to Big Bang Theory.
  • She can move the buckets of blocks around the living room.  And she excels at dumping them out.  She can also put two blocks together.
  • She has started to try to put socks on.  She found the box of unmatched socks, pulled it down from the shelf, and one by one tried to put each one on.
  • She likes to brush her teeth, but refuses our help.
  • Her favorite food is probably macaroni and cheese.
  • Her favorite game is peek-a-boo.
  • Her favorite toy is anything Audrey is using
  • She's wearing 18-24 month clothes, size 4 shoes.
  • She uses a spoon and fork pretty well and prefers those over her fingers.  And she refuses help.
